Federal Issue Shirts

  Instructor: Brian White

This class will present a discussion about Federal issue army shirts, their varieties, materials and construction, and useage during the war. Originally produced and issued by the millions, Federal issue shirts are often absent among reenactors and living historians and
yet are an important piece of a material impression. Highlights of the discussion will touch
upon U.S. Army Quartermaster pattern shirts versus "contract" pattern shirts as well as their
distribution ratios based on original purchase/contract reports and period photographs.

Brian White is currently a partner in Wambaugh, White, & Company, manufacturers of authentic Federal and Confederate uniforms. With over ten years of reenacting, historical interpretation, and living history under his belt, Brian has focused a pasttime into a full-time study of Civil War era material culture. At the request of artist/historian Don Troiani, Brian conducted research and wrote a study detailing the uniforms of the U.S. Sharpshooters during the Chancellorsville and Gettysburg campaigns. Brian is currently authoring an extensive primary source study of the war-time uniforms and equipments of the U.S. Sharpshooters which he hopes to publish.
